Types of conformity
Conformity
A type of majority influence
Occurs when a larger group of people influences a smaller group to adjust behaviours or opinions to fit in
Internalisation
Changing our behaviour to go along with majority behaviour
We have been convinced they are correct
Change is permanent
Compliance
Changing our behaviour to go along with the majority
We don't really agree with them
Identification
Changing beliefs to resemble a person or group we admire
We want to be like them, to identify with them
Change may be temporary
Reasons for conformity
ISI
Conforming to the majority in the belief that they are right
The need to be correct
Most common in ambiguous or new situations
Uncertain of right or wrong behaviours or beliefs
Experts, the other people that know more are probably right
NSI
Conforming to the majority in order to fit in with the group
Seeking social approval
The need to be accepted by the group
Fear of rejection
Emotional process
Applies to friends (care about their opinions) and Strangers (don't know them well enough to not feel judged)
