Affluence and consumerism
There was an increasing amount of consumer goods in british households
Hire Purchase schemes allowed a buyer to pay a deposit for an expensive purchase and pay monthly instalments with interest to hire it over the length of the contract. At the end of the contract the buyer could choose to buy the item outright or return it.
Consumerism became particularly visible on TV
ITV was launched in 1955
People got used to glossy new adverts on TV between popular programmes

Between 1957 and 1959 the number of households who owned a television grew by 32%
By 1960 there was ten million TV sets in use
