-
-
-
the origin of speech
chomsky said that humans have universal grammar; such as double negative speech (nobody doesn't, etc. )
-
natural selection plays an (important) role in the evolution of the design of a language (S. Pinker and Paul Bloom)
brain imaging, neuroscience, and genetics helps to go deeper into the brain and our biological past
-
"many researcher think hand and face gestures offer behavior; that is more analogous to speech, than animal vocalization"
-
latest linguistic studies say that clicks produced by some people in Africa and Australia have deep roots
-
genetic data say that click-speaking populations go back toa common ancestor maybe around 50 000 years ago
though, it is not proven whether clicks was the first language
conclusions
language is a system that evolved through conventional neo-darwinian mechanisms (pinker and bloom, 1990; s. pinker, 279)
"modern language abilities are in large part the products of a history of selection for neural circuitry enabling efficient communication of an unlimited set of messages of a certain kind (s. pinker)"
