    - - Boethius: he defines a person as an individual substance with a rational nature. He clarifies that the concept of person does not apply to universals, accidents, relations, lifeless bodies, living bodies without sense (e.g., trees), or things lacking in mind and reason. Boethius also provides etymological support from Latin and Greek to explain his definition of a person.
      - Aquinas: in his discussion of spiritual beings, he claimed that there are various sorts of angels. His claim would seem to imply that people are different from other creatures
      - Locke: he defined a person as a thinking intelligent being capable of reason and self-awareness. He argued that an individual's identity is determined by their memory and consciousness, rather than their physical body or thinking substances. However, this definition has been criticized for suggesting that individual people are more like changing mental states rather than enduring beings.
      - P. F. Strawson argues that persons are a unique type of individuals who possess both states of consciousness and corporeal characteristics. He asserts that the concept of a person takes logical precedence over the concept of a body and is a fundamental and primitive concept in understanding individuals.
- - - - Normative priority: an individual's rights, choices, and values take precedence over collective or societal interests. (keep in mind that social and individual values might not be 2 distinct things)
      - Epistemological Priority: aspects of knowledge & reasonable belief depend entirely on operations of the individual's mind, sense perception, and memory. Things such as tradition, shared customs, and testimony are disregarded by moderns and considered unreliable.
      - Ontological priority: individual entities have primary ontological significance and reality, and that collective entities or institutions are derived from or secondary to these individuals. (Ontology: 3elem el woujoud)
