Affects upon children
Positive impacts
Aid people in understanding differences in needs, culture and personalities.
Children with SEN can be offered more time and practice to cope with the content and to learn skills that would have been taught to the entire class, while other learners are busy with enrichment activities (Selvaraj, 2015).
Gifted learners can be given more challenging and enriching activities activities whilst learners with SEN receive the assistance they require (Hove and Phasha, 2022)
Negative impacts
It can make the ability gap between low and high attainers wider (Hallam and Parsons, 2012)
Ofsted (2022) using the phrase 'lower ability' perpetuates the myth in schools that some children are born with an innate talent and some are not, which can lead to a self fulfilling prophesy.
When a pupil is moved down to a lower ability group they have a sense of failure and can have a detrimental affect upon their wellbeing and motivation
Setting can lead middle out, as focus is upon challenging higher ability and supporting lower ability (Marks, 2014)
Choice in language about being 'smart' and 'clever' develops a fixed mentality and the belief that intelligence is a fixed trait. Giving a child the label 'clever' causes children to under-perform (Dweck, 2014)

Positive impacts
For classroom teachers, they can inform and improve teaching practice, assisting young people both academically and personally (Owen, 2018)

Allow teachers to tailor instruction towards each child, to meet the needs of all children, for example, adjusting the pace of work (Carroll, 2022)
Negative impacts
Adds pressure on teachers who must re-evaluate, group, re-group and customize instruction for all students (Gautam, 2021)
Affects upon parents
Positive impacts
For many parents, diagnostic labels help define the problems their children face and allow greater understanding. Having a name for the condition means the parents can acquire knowledge, seek help, and take action to better the situation (Cheng, 2014)
