rural to urban migration in brazil
Push Factors
Less jobs available in rural areas as agriculture becomes more mechanised.
Employers in rural areas do not follow the law as to minimum wage and other employee rights leading to them being underpaid and maltreated.
Farms and estates have been joined by agricultural production companies, this increase in landlessness has lead to higher migration.
Desertification is taking place in the north east and deforestation in the north. This removes land that could have been uses for farmland thus less people are need to farm the land.
Social conditions are poor like housing, health and education
Pull Factors
Paid employment is more likely in the urban area, this is because the informal sector has many jobs available and some may get into the formal sector at a latter date.
Living in closer proximity of healthcare and education making it more available. This is particularly useful for migrants with children as they can get a good education and hopefully ending up with a well paid formal job.
Attraction of better housing than in the rural areas although the houses are deteriorated and are inner-city houses (favelas). The money made in employment can fund developments to upgrade there house.
Greater accesses to retail services as they are closer to shops allowing them to get things cheaper thus buy more of a wide range of food and resources.
Internet access in particular important to young migrants, there is little access to this in the rural areas whereas in the urban areas there is a much greater access.
Cultural and social attractions are far more accessible in these areas.
Problems caused by this.
Overcrowding
Immigrants taking the job opportunity's away from the locals
Is rural to urban migration beneficial in brazil?
For the immigrants it is beneficial as there are many pull factors which will allow them to be in a better financial position and there family's will benefit as the children will be able to get a good education at school. there is also the availability of health care should they need it.
For brazil migration is not beneficial as the urban areas have to expand, as more people migrate which can be expensive for the government which is not very developed thus lack the funds.
