RELIGIOUS PLURALISM AND THEOLOGY
EXCLUSIVISM
the view that one religion offers the complete means of salvation
in christianity people must have explicit faith in jesus to be saved
might support their belief using texts such as 'JESUS ANSWERED, " IA AM THE WAY AND THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXEPCT THROUGH ME"
narrow exclusivists
believe only some christians can reach salvation
augustine - christians are subject to the grace of god and god chooses
HENDRIK KRAEMER
religions are whole belief systems, it doesnt make sense to pick and choose. no middle ground
broad exclusivists
all christians who accept christ are saved regardless of their style of worship, denomination or practices
INCLUSIVISM
argue that there is the possibility of salvation for non-christians but christianity is the best route to achieve salvation
'I KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVES, AND THAT IN THE END HE WILL STAND ON THE EARTH'
salvation possible after death
some inclusivists argue alvation may be possible for an individual if they turn to christianity after death
non christians do christian work
non chrisitans may call god another name but do christian work without realising, for example muslims as part of zakah, the third pillar of their faith. they could be doing the work of faith without realising
karl rahner- partial truths
other religions may contain partial truths
many people are not exposed to the message of christianitt
jews who lived before jesus or people who live where the gospel has not arrived
anaonymous christians
rahner - people who are actually following christian beleifs without actually realising it
use the old testameny prophets to support this
PLURALISM
the view that there are any ways to salvation through different religions. truth is not exclusive to one religion
all religions are aiming to lead moral lives and understand god, the divine or ultimate reality.
difference in beliefs and practices are the result of human culture
quotation from micah 6:8
pluralism may be supported using texts such as ' and what does the lord require to you? to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your god'
hicks pluralist views
an omnibenevolent god would not deny salvation to an individual if they were looking to serve god
god wills universal salvation and the afterlife provides the opportunity for individuals to continue their spiritual journey
religion is flawed and limited. therfore christian truth cliams about hesus must be understood as myth
panikkars beliefs about god
raised in hindu and catholic traditions
believed that god makes himself known to humans in a variety of ways
CHRISTIAN THEORIES ABOUT SALVATION
all of the religions could be wrong, but they cannot all be right
the message of christianity is undermined and diluted if belief in jesus christ is not neccesary for salvation
sole salvation
passeges from the bible support the position that christianity is the only means of salvation
in john 14:6 - 'JESUS ANSWERED, " I AM THE WAY AND THE TRUTH OF LIFE. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXEPCT THROUGH ME'
pluralist counter argument
a pluralist might respond that christ is 'a truth' rather than 'the truth'
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A LOVING GOD AND SALVATION
not accepting the christian message
god has made salvation available to everyone. if people wish to acept the message of christianity, then they cannot blame god for the consequences of their action
sin
as humans are born with original sin, no one is deserving of salvation
for augustine, it is only through gods love that a select few will reach salvation
pointless christian message
if jesus christ died on the cross for no reason, then the message of christianity is pointless. there is no imperitive to reach salvation if all people receive salvation whatever their belief
