- Interaction with others is limited until we learn the language
- Language depends on symbols that give same meaning
- Thought allows role taking (the ability to put oneself in another's place)

a) Looking-glass self : our ability to see ourselves as another see us
3 priciple are associated with looking-glass self:
- we imagine how we appear to others
- we imagine their judgement of us
- we feel hurt or pride based on these self-feelings
b) Pygmalion effect : living up to or down to another's expectations of usc) Two dimensions of self
- I = subject : acting self
example: I might want to go out and party all night
- Me = object : observing self
example: Me might acknowledge the homework assignment that should be done instead of partying

a) Particular Others - individuals who are significants to us
