Cognitive Capacity; man's state of nature.
strives to understand the reality of there creator
Man's State of Nature
HLR - Man's state of nature is what humanity was like before society and without rule of law
Hayy ibn Yaqthan - Man's state of nature is pure, ascetic, and pondering
Fitra can be tampered by the effects of society
Fitra Readings - Fitrah is put there by God Himself and is our innate untampered nature which holds the key to many different abstract ideas
has a desire to understand his Lord
Different levels of cognitive maturity and intellectual capabilites
People can enhance their intellect by acquiring knowledge. They aren't 'stuck' with their given capabilities
Intellectual laziness can inhibit this ability
You must pair the senses with cognitive maturity and intellect
These levels were explained in depth by Ibn Khaldun.
Man has an innate desire to preach/teach others of his knowledge
The man in Plato's Allegory of the Cave went back to his people and attempted to teach them about reality
Innate desire to pursue knowledge and the truth. Began from the time of Adam (AS).
Many ways to achieve it. Isolation and pondering allows for reflection on this world. Also requires sacrifices.
Man has an innate desire/urge to learn and understand the world around him and how to interact with it
Hayy spends part 1, 2, and 3 understanding and defining the world around him: he performs dissections/vivisections, classifies animal, plant, and object spirits, etc.
Ibn Khaldun's levels of cognitive maturity
Plato: once man is free he goes forth to understand the world around him; despite his initial discomfort he
must
go on to understand it; arguably those in the cave have also defined/understood the world around them (named the shadows)
Muslim philosophers: fitrah relates to intellect
when Hayy was young, he was actively trying to understand his environment
Man's state of nature tends to be an inclination towards perceiving the world.
Men's state of nature often depends on there fitra to understand the universe as well as life around them
Desire to seek the truth
fitrah, naturally comes to realization of god
Man's fitra is originally pure so he is inclined to do good. But when tampered with like that of most people he is inclined to do both.
