Older adults strive to maintain a high quality life by being socially and physically active.
Benefits
Example
Participating in community events, learn about technology, and be involved in social clubs. (Social engagement)
Engage in physical activity such as yoga, tai chi, or brisk walking. Activities can be done solo or in a group such as family or friends
Continuity theory
What?
As individuals age, they continue to maintain their existing lifestyle, behaviors, interest, and values to establish a sense of continuity in their lives
Benefits
Example ;
An elderly who's had a lifelong passion for gardening continues to do gardening during his retirement age and participate in gardening community events
Biological aspect
Wear and tear theory
What?
As individuals age, the body accumulates damage over time if the individual leads a sedentary lifestyle which decrease functional mobility as our joints, muscles would weakened
Example: An elderly who watches tv with loud volume is bound to experience hearing loss
Prevention - Take care of our eyes and ears by not watching tv to close
Example: An elderly who leads a sedentary lifestyle is bound to have weaker joints and muscles which decreases his/her capability to do ADLs
Prevention - Be active during younger days to stay physically active by exercising with friends and family, or join an exercise programme
