English Essay plan - Comparative essay
Key idea/s:
Love overpowers the struggles of abuse and discrimination
Every individual in a community is loved and protected
Structure:
400 words per body paragraph, 100 words for the introduction, 100 words for the conclusion.
each body paragraph will portray a different key idea
The body paragraphs will consist of around 50-50 similarities and differences, so 200 words for similarities, the other 200 for differences.
2 texts & types:
Samson and Delilah (film)
Mangrove Bird (poem)
Similarities:
The main characters' love for each other kept them together
They have the same ideas
The 2 main characters' (especially the female's) love for their community brought them back together again
Both texts included symbolism to some extent
Differences:
Samson and Delilah had rough patches in their relationship (e.g. rocky start, substance abuse), but Mangrove Bird had the couple loving each other consistently
Samson and Delilah had another key idea which was different to the Mangrove Bird: key idea was "substance abuse divides people"
different techniques: for the poem there are literary techniques (e.g. repetition, structure), while for the film there are film techniques (e.g. mise-en-scene, shots, symbolism)
Through the poem (Mangrove Bird), it is suggested that the female character loves her community. However, during the film (Samson and Delilah), the female main character does not love her community. She does love her community, but she holds some negative feelings for them as well, like resentment and anger.
