Religion
- The majority of Indians practice Hinduism, which is one of the world's oldest religions. It has a wide range of beliefs and practices, including karma, dharma, and the worship of many gods and goddesses.
- Islam is the second-largest religion in India. It was introduced by Arab traders and later by the Mughal rulers.
Language
- India is one of the most diverse countries with over 1600 languages spoken.
- India recognizes 22 official languages, including Hindi, which is the most widely spoken, and English.
- Almost every state in India has its own regional language, e.g. Bengali in West Bengal, Tamil in Tamil Nadu and Telugu in Andhra Pradesh.
Population
- India is the most populous country in the world, with a population of over 1.4 billion people.
- The population is distributed unevenly across the country, with higher population densities in some states and regions; particularly in the northern and western parts of India.
-India has a young population, with a significant portion under the age of 30. This can be an asset for the country's workforce, but it also presents challenges in terms of education.
- India's life expectancy is 70 years, whereas in 1950, it was only 35.
Culture and Customs
- Indian-origin religions such as Hinduism and Sikhism are based on the concepts of karma.
- Ahimsa, the use of non-violence is also prevalent, most famously used by Mahatma Gandhi to unite India during their move for independence.
- India has a extremely common joint family system, where extended family usually all live together in one house. This is extremely rare in the West and is seen as restrictive.
- Arranged marriages are common in Indian society.
