The theory of why they abandoned it was because cattle grazing had worn out their grass lands.
Farming had also worn out the soil.
The people of Zimbabwe had used up all the timbre & salt.
After everything was worn out the territory was longer able to support the large population
Portuguese explorers had found out of this place in the 1500's
Karl Mauch a german explorer was one of the firs Europeans to discover the remains of the dwellings in 1871
