Southern Africa & Great Zimbabwe
The Great Zimbabwe
Located between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers
fertile land which was good for farming and raising cattle
was near a very important trade route
connected goldfields and Sofala
both huge trade cities during this time
after 1000 Zimbabwe took control of them
became the captial of Zimbabwe for 200 years
why was the city abandoned if it was so successful?
Trade
Taxed people who used their trade routes
also taxed less powerful chiefs
became the political, economical, and religious center of the empire
Architechture
had great tall walls known as the great enclosure which had valleys between them
many huts made of stone and mud
had huts for religious ceremonies, etc.
had huts within and outside of the great enclosures to represent social class
ones inside had a lot of space between them while the ones outside were packed tightly
the elite ate cattle while the commoners had goat or mutton.

Nation-State: this concept applies because the Great Zimbabwe was a city that had a ruler but they didn't answer to anyone else
Evacuations of the ruins...
No one knows for sure why it was abandoned but there are theories
cattle grazing had worn out the grasslands
farmings had worn out the soil, and people had used up the salt and timber
The area could no longer support a large population
Natural Resources//The theory on why they left was due to the lack of resources because they had used them
What other reasons do you think they might have evacuated the ruins?
