the second republic (1931 - 1939)
1931:
This legally elected government made many changes. It:
abolished the monarchy
created a new constitution in 1931
introduced land and religious reforms
allowed freedom of speech
gave women a vote.
1936:
Generals Mola, Sanrujo and Franco organised a military uprising
1937:
The rebels took País Vasco, Cantabria and Asturias.
1938:
Teruel was captured by the rebels
1939:
Barcelona,Valencia and Madrid fell to the rebels. The second republic ended
What was post-war Spain like? (1939 - 1975)
1939 - 1950:
Franco controlled everything and would send to prison for their beliefs
1950 - 1960:
New buildings were constructed in towns and cities.
The economy became more liberal
School were controlled by the state and the catholic church
Women were told their role in the home
1960 - 1975:
Franco was forced to abandon the self - sufficient policy.
in the early 1960's spain started to internationally trade
people left the agricultural to work in cities with modern industries
The transition to democracy (1975 - 2004)
1975:
Francisco Franco appointed Prince Juan Carlos, grandson of Alfonso XII, to be his successor.
1976:
King Juan Carlos I gave responsibility for the transition to democracy to Adolfo Suárez.
1977:
The first democratic elections were held and Adolfo Suárez's party won.
The constitution of 1978 was approved by the Parliament and Spanish citizens in a referendum.
1981:
Lieutenant Colonel Tejero attempted a coup on 23 February. The coup failed.
1982 - 1996:
The psoe won the general elections in 1982, 1986, 1989 and 1993. Felipe González was Prime Minister. Spain became a member of the EEC (now the EU) in 1986.
1996 - 2004:
The PP won the general elections in 1996 and 2000. José María Aznar was Prime Minister.
21st-century Spain (2004 - 2021)
2004 - 2011:
The PSOE won the elections in 2004 and 2008. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero became Prime Minister.
2011 - 2016:
The PP won the general elections and Mariano Rajoy became Prime Minister.
2018:
After a vote of no confidence in Rajoy, Pedro Sánchez, the leader of the PSOE, became Prime minister. Sánchez won the general elections In January 2020 formed a government in coalition with Unidas Podemos. In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic began.
2021:
The Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma erupted in September 2021. the eruption lasted 85 days and caused widespread damage to infrastructure, homes and crops.
