Types of experiments
Laboratory experymets
An experiment that takes place in a controlled environment within which the researcher manipulates the IV and records the effect on the DV, whilst maintaining strict control of extraneous variables.
Strengths: High control on EV (external variable) which means that reasercher can ensure that any effect on the DV is likely to be result of manipulation of the IV.
Replication is more possible because of high level of control.
New EV are not introduced when repeat the experiment.
Replication is vital to check the results to see if the findings is valid and not just a one - off.
Limitations: Lack of generalisability.
Low external validity.
Participants are usually aware being tested this can rise to 'unnatural' behavior.
May not represent represent real-life experience .
Low mundane realism.
Field experiments
An experiment that takes place in a natural setting within which the researcher manipulates the IV and records the effect on the DV.
Strength : Higher mundane realism than lab because is more natural.
May produce behaviour that is more valid and authentic.
Participants may be unaware that are studied.
High external validity
Limitation: Price to pay to increase realismdue to loss of control of EV.
Means case and effect between IV and DV .
Can be more difficult to establish and precise replication is not possible.
Important Ethical issues . Being unaware can have invasion of privacy.
Natural experiments
An experiment where the change in the IV is not brought about by the researcher but would have happened even if the researcher had not been there. The researcher records the effect on the DV.

Quasi-experiments
A study that is almost an experiment but lacks in ingredients.
The IV has not been determined by anyone - no one manipulate simply exists.
-
Limitations: Cannot randomly allocate participants to conditions and therefore there may be confounding variables
