Welfare Capitalism
Democratic Socialism
Marxism
People: Karl Marx
Key Values:
- Valued the abolition of capitalism as it brought unfair treatments and exploitation of the working class also known as the proletariats. Belief that proletariat would overthrow the bourgeoisie through a radical change.
- Belief of classless society, all individuals sharing equal amounts of good and wealth among society. Valuing the ownership of public property and collective principles that benefited people as a whole.
- Marxism embraces more of a collectivist society, in which the government is more involved in the production of goods and how they are produced, and how they will be distributed among society.
Role of Government: The government is heavily involved in the economy and the political system. They want collective ownership of businesses as well as a centrally planned economy.
Marxism values the equality of individuals in society, and one of its guiding principles is free education for all. The image I've chosen represents Marxism by emphasizing the importance of education.

People: Robert Owen
Key Values:
- Economic equality among society. Abolishment of any wealth gap and everyone benefitting the same way from money.
Role of Government: The above is accomplished through government intervention, by having publicly owned industries (run by the state) and protecting labour rights to ensure workers have good working conditions as well as fair pay to control any wealth disparity.
- Valued peaceful change through labour unions and implementing government regulations. Society has the power to create change, they could vote for socialist parties, this giving the people more say.
- Believe in equality among society and values of democracy, individual rights and freedoms. Believing that everyone should be treated equally and respectfully.
-
-
Explanation: Democratic Socialism values the equality of society and the consent of the governed, which matches the political system used in this ideology, democracy. The image is of the starting of democracy in Athens, Greece which very much relates to Democratic Socialism.
-
Key Values:
- Value of government dependance on providing for the needs of its citizens, for example government services such as universal health care, education, public housing and insurance.
- Through government, valued the rights of workers and regulated laws related to minimum wage, working hours, better working conditions etc. essentially values the improvement of capitalism rather than abolishing it.
- Values the right to vote for both men and women of different groups, education, individual rights, and th private ownership of businesses but under the supervision of the government to protect the rights of workers.
Role of Government: The government is involved in the economic system to better the conditions created by Laissez-faire capitalism.
Classical Liberalism
-
Explanation: Classical liberalism is all about valuing individualist principles and the idea of no government intervention in the market. therefore, the above image was chosen to represent how in classical liberalism, each individual is an advocate for their own self interests in society without having to focus on depending on others or the government for benefits.
-
People: John Stuart Mill
Key Values:
- Classical liberalism puts great emphasis on the ideas of individualism and the values of individuals rights and their interests mainly in an economic system which mostly focuses on the freedom of business owners rather than individual rights as a whole.
- Limited government intervention in the economy, this means all rules and regulations by the government are kept to a minimum in a classical liberal society and that every person acts on his or her behalf.
- Rules and regulations made within society from the individuals rather then the government.
Role of Government: No government involvement in classical liberalism, principles of individualists are valued, private property owned by people rather than the government
-
Explanation: essentially the whole idea of a welfare capitalism was to diminish the negative effects of laissez faire capitalism but still value the concept of capitalism rather than abolishing it. Therefore, welfare capitalism still has those similar ideas of creating wealth and private property in the economy, but with the intervention of a government that solely protects the rights of workers and individual freedom for all. Hence why the above image was chosen, as the person in the middle represents the government in which values profit on one side but also equally values individual/ worker rights on the other.
