Race & Gender Inequality Mind Map
Gender
Women are the most common victims of sexual assault, with sexual crimes being committed against women about 90% of the time. 1 in 6 women have been the victim of a completed or attempted rape.
Men are disbelieved to be the victims of sexual crimes. There is a stereotype that rape is
only
ever committed against women.
Race
Women of color face a greater difficulty in having their stories believed.
Women of color are victims at disproportionately high rates. These discrepancies are often ignored by both law enforcement and the media.
Criminal justice institutions and public culture do not prioritize these women as highly as white women are prioritized. The stories that draw the most attention are usually the crimes that are committed against young, educated, white women.
Black Women
Moreover, these women are less likely to be believed. They have a harder time getting legal justice, and they are less frequently discussed in the media.
Black women are assaulted at higher rates than white women.
Studies have shown that Black women are considerably less likely to be believed than white women—perpetuating racial discrepancies.
Violence against women
Sexist and misogynist culture reinforces this gendered disparity. The objectification and belittlement of women in culture increases the occurrence of these crimes.
Sexist culture makes it harder for women to speak out and get the justice they deserve. Rape culture—embracing misogynistic thinking—places the blame squarely on female victims, asking ridiculous questions like "Well, what were
you
wearing?" This culture of sexism makes it harder for women to be believed or taken seriously.
Most sexual crimes and violence are committed against women at an alarmingly disproportionate rate.
Not only are women more likely to be victims, but the inherent misogyny of rape culture makes it more difficult for survivors to find relief—mentally, legally, and socially.

Exploring “rape culture” and the social discrepancies surrounding rape reporting and prevention
Rape culture disbelieving men
The lack of representation or awareness about male victims makes it harder for these individuals to speak out about the crimes and trauma they've endured.
Social stigma has perpetuated a false idea that "men don't get raped" or that these crimes aren't a big deal or only happen in specific situations.
Although sexual crimes are often committed against women, in cases where these crimes are committed against men, male victims are often disbelieved.
Indigenous Women
Indigenous women are more likely to be the victims of sexual and violent crimes.
Women in indigenous communities also face disproportionately high victim rates.
Studies have shown that up to 60% of indigenous women have been victims of sexual assault.
