Engineering Study Notes 112-117
Hot Forming Processes
Forgework
Is used for heating metal until soft and then shaped as required
The Forge
It is used for heating metal which is called a hearth
Two types of forge
Gas fired
Coal fired
The Anvil
It is used for supporting hot metal being forged
It is made from high carbon steel
Chiseling is not allowed to be carried out because it can damage the surface and the chisel edge
Anvils are available in various weights
The Leg Vice
It is used for the hammering and bending of metals which is good for forge work
It is bolted to the bench so that the leg fits into a socket in the floor
Tongs
It is used for gripping hot metals while they are being forged
Types of Tongs
Close mouth tongs
It is used for gripping thin materials
Open mouth tongs
It is used for gripping articles with large ends
Hollow bit tongs
It is used for gripping thick materials
Bolt tongs
It is for gripping round, square, hexagonal and octagonal metals
Hints on Forging
Hold the hammer by the end of the handle, not up near the head
Keep the hammer head at the correct angle when striking the work to avoid leaving hammer marks
Remove the scale from the heated metal before forging and keep the anvil face free of scale
Drawing Down
It is forging operation which includes reducing the cross-section of a bar and increasing its length
When forming a square point, the bar must be turned through 90 degrees from time to time to keep the section square
