13.2: Preparing for a Talk
Pull audience in using slides, but keep simple
Avoid bright colors, too small of font, and simple font that is easy to read.
Limit text on each slide; use bullet points for most key information
Audience prefer pictures
Include title for figures/tables, but no legend/caption
PRACTICE
13.1: Format of a Scientific Talk
Organize slides for presentation
Include: Title slide(1st), overview of talk(2nd), introduction/background(3rd- next few), findings (following slides), conclusion(final slide)
Clearly identify the purpose after the introduction
Present most important information; include most important figures/tables
Know your audience
Consider including an overview slide for longer presentations
13.4: Question-and-Answer Period
Take charge; be calm and polite when asked difficult questions
Do: Direct answer to entire audience, repeat question so entire audience has a chance to hear it clearly, be courteous when answering
Don't: Argue with questioner, make up an answer
13.3: Delivery of a Talk
Things to do: arrive early, dress well, speak clearly and slowly, stick to time limit, keep eye contact, keep flow of presentation.
