Since science-fiction stories are not real, all the jargon is made up by the author. This means that no one knows what the terms mean unless the author explains them. So why do sci-fi authors use jargon? Ideally, it makes characters and dialogue have a higher level of verisimilitude (this word describes things that "feel real, but is known to be fake". When you watch a character in a sci-fi show cry and think that the actor/actress looked really devastated by grief, but you know the story isn't real, you think the text has a high level of verisimilitude). We expect people in the future to use jargon (and weird slang) so authors try to include it in their stories. If they use too much or it sounds too weird, we start to hate it. Everyone has their own internal tolerance for sci-fi jargon. Some people love it, other people hate stories the second they mention something like "cryo".
