IR Terminologies
state → internationally recognized gov (critical criteria)., borders, has a territory (within borders it controls), people/pop.
anarchy → no higher authority int. politics to effectively adjudicate conflict within states
o At the end of the day, org. + intl. institutions lack power and may not be universally recognized in power they have
o*notion of anarchy + hierarchy is what differentiate domestic + intl. politics
hierarchy → settle stable state: have a gov. (authority to make + enforce laws), people living under authority recognize authority as such
balancing (internal vs external) → states will see another state growing in power, and those states will try to counteract the growing power of that other state
o Internal → e.g. increasing defense spending
o External → e.g. forming alliances with other countries

balance of power/distribution of capabilities → nation or group of nations protecting itself against another nation or group of nations by matching its power against the power of the other side

Liberalism
Neo-liberal institutionalism (Keohane 1984)
• International institutions provides information i.e. rules, to do/not to do), e.g. WTO, UN, etc. + information just on states to other states…?
Democratic Peace Theory
• Democracy (especially liberal democracy) do not go to war against each other
e.g. US' invasions didn't affect liberal democracies
• Critique → viewed as a hegemonic peace under US power (fear of US)
