Biological Approach
AO1
Assumptions
Everything psychological is at first biological, so to fully understand human behaviour are most first look at biological structures & processes within the body
Mind lives in Brain so all thoughts, emotions and behaviours have a physical basis
-
Genetic Basis
-
-
-
Analyse concordance rates, the extent to which twins share same characteristics (measured as % or decimal)
If a trait is genetic then MZ twins should show high concordance rates as they share 100% of genes compared to DZ who only share 50%
Genotype vs Phenotype
-
Phenotype = way genes are expressed through physical, behavioural, and psychological traits
MZ twins share 100% of genes, but there are still differences in their phenotype
Evolution and Behaviour:
-
Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection = any behaviour that helps an animal’s survival and reproduction will continue in future generations
-
-
Artificial selection = farmers breed animals with desirable characteristics e.g cows with high milk yield so cows become better milk producers over generations
AO3
Strengths
Real world Applications
Neurochemical processes are associated with mental disorders which has led to development of psychoactive drugs to treat conditions e.g antidepressants for clinical depression increase serotonin levels in the brain.
It allows people with mental disorders to manage their symptoms better and live their lives in the community; improving their quality of life
