As shown in the picture, the coffee table is sitting two inches below the couch making it more accessible for the user.
The coffee table should usually sit around 2 inches below the height of the seats around it this will insure that a person using it can use it comfortably without bending their back or overstretching their arms to reach the tabletop.
A coffee tables height is an extremely important feature in its design as it helps achieve and comfortable and visually pleasing layout.
Proportion
When building a coffee table it is important to consider the proportion of the coffee table compared to the surrounding furniture and room.

As seen in the image, the coffee table at 2/3s the size of the couch fits nicely into the layout without being dwarfed or over powering the surrounding furniture.
Wood
The type of wood is a very important feature when building the coffee table. To make an attractive project that seamlessly blends in with the room its in, the piece should not significantly contrast with the surrounding theme of the room as it can overpower other furniture and therefore make it look like it's out of place or like it shouldn't be there.
I think hardwoods look a lot nicer than softwoods. Therefore I will use hardwoods when building the coffee table. Some examples I could use are.
