To talk about an action that was in progress at a particular time in the past.
He was playing basketball.
PERFECT SIMPLE
To show the relationship between two past actions.
I had seen her dog few minutes ago

To talk about a completed action in the past.

Expresses an action that was occurring when it was interrupted by another.
