Learning Objective #1: After a 60-minute continuing education course, the attendee will be able to choose the most appropriate homecare regimen for the cancer patient, while recognizing a patient’s abilities and limitations.
Learning Objective #2: After a 60-minute continuing education course, the attendee will be able to give management instructions for maintaining good oral hygiene during cancer treatment, in a compassionate manner.
DESIGN
Purpose: "The process of specifying how it is to be learned" (McGriff, 2000)
Target Audience: Dental professionals who are attending continuing education at a local college.
This learning unit will be taught to dental professionals using a powerpoint consisting of product information, visual images of oral mucosities, and instruction guides. There will be participant participation using role playing and group questions.
DEVELOPMENT
Purpose: "The process of authoring and producing the materials" (McGriff, 2000)
Instruction Materials
Case study patients that are undergoing cancer treatment and their symptoms. Real life images of oral mucosities that are caused from cancer treatment.
Role playing an actual appointment where the attendee can get hands on training on recommending and guiding a cancer patient in oral hygiene instruction.
PowerPoint based presentation with factual evidence, product descriptions and guides for the condition each product is best used for.
IMPLEMENTATION
Purpose: "The process of installing the projection in a real world context" (McGriff, 2000).
EVALUATION
Purpose: "The process of determining the adequacy of the instruction" (McGriff,2000).
Summative Evaluation: To measure effectiveness of presentation, I will give a 10 question quiz to the attendees.
Formative Evaluation: To measure effectiveness of presentation, I will hand out a brief survey to evaluate the participants knowledge and procedure that they currently have of oral hygiene instruction for cancer patients.
Mode of Delivery: In-person, "classroom" based setting.
