Symbols
Fairy tale
The Romance of Tristan is very similar to a typical fairy tale, where prince kills a dragon to gain a princess and kingdom. Here the role of prince is played by Tristan.
Wild life
When Tristan understood that he couldn’t be so long without Iseult, they decided to run in the forest in its wild life. Under “wild life” the author means life without rules and prohibitions that are usual to royal life.
Drama
Here we can see love, death, treason, tragedy – everything needed for making out of this story a performance on the stage. Also dialogues are written as in a play.
Themes
Love
The main and most prominent theme in the story is love. It is forbidden and unexpected, because Tristan and Iseult drank poisoned wine that was made for Iseult and King, but deep and true as far as the couple couldn’t hold their feelings inside and weren't afraid of being revealed
Royal life
The author breaks people’s expectations about the seemingly luxurious life of royalty. The story shows us that such life is often worse than life of ordinary people; it has specific and cruel rules and traditions. As an example, Iseult couldn’t choose whom to marry and Tristan was exiled because of his love for Iseult.
Treason
The only person who goes through most of the treasons is King Mark. He was betrayed by the closest people – Tristan and Iseult. Their love to each other broke king’s heart, and he couldn’t think that his loyal soldier and friend Tristan would lead away his future wife.
Plot
Tristan is a prince whose mother is the sister of the King, Mark. Both of his parents died when he was young, and he was raised by Gorvenal to be a gifted swordsman and musician (Tristan became an accomplished harp-player). Isolde, meanwhile, is a princess, the King of Ireland’s daughter. She is beautiful and fair-haired and admired far and wide.
