Pulmonary Function Testing - Operation and Troubleshooting
Analysis
Target audience: Registered Respiratory Therapist at Mann Grandstaff VA who are new to pulmonary function testing or needing a refresher course.
Communication with my manager is required to ensure I have access to the pulmonary function lab to record my presentation.
Date, Time, availability of lab.
Review of the American Thoracic Societies standards for pulmonary function testing required prior to my lesson. This will ensure I am up to date with industry standards.
Goal is to create a viewable video lecture to be used for training of new hires within the pulmonary function lab. This lecture will establish the basics of PFT's, how our equipment works, and general troubleshooting.
Design
Create learning objectives for this lecture
After attending the teaching unit, the student will calibrate the pulmonary function testing machine without help.
After attending the teaching unit, the student will discuss three benefits of pulmonary function testing with a partner.
After attending the teaching unit, the student will describe the aspects of a flow-volume loop within spirometry testing with 90% accuracy.
Assess the pulmonary function lab I will be using for my presentation.
Ensure there is enough space to film lecture, as well as allow for 1-2 learners to attend live.
Communicate with our department educator to determine who they would like to have attend live, and how we will store the video for future use.
Development
Work through complete lecture with my mentor, to ensure timing and learning objectives are met.
Create notes to guide me along throughout my lecture.
To include talking points, pauses for learning moments and areas to stop for questions.
Practice the activities I will have the students complete for their learning objectives.
What areas of a flow-volume loop do they need to recognize?
How long will calibration take?
Implementation
Complete lecture in appropriate time given by due date of the assignment.
Have learners complete a survey regarding course content and confidence level.
Survey will be <5 minutes on a pre-written paper
Save video for future presentations to new hires within the department.
Will save to personal hard-drive, as well emailed to management and staff educator
Provide adequate time for questions to be asked from learners regarding any confusion or misunderstanding of topic.
Evaluation
Review surveys from learners to understand what worked and what did not within my lecture.
Watch video recording with my mentor/staff educator to go over what could be improved.
This model could be used for other trainings within the Respiratory Department.
Assess my own strengths/weakness as an educator to determine personal goals for myself.
