RURAL COUNTRY
• Towns were small
• Most people lived and worked on farms
FARMS WERE
CHANGING
• Richer farmers took over the smaller farms
• This caused a lot of unemployment in the
countryside
• Unemployed farmers left the countryside to
find work in the towns.
FACTORIES WERE
MECHANIZATION OF
INDUSTRY
• Many machines were invented for the
spinning of cotton
• 1705 Thomas Newcomen invented the 1st
steam engine
• 1769 James Watt invented the first steam
engine that provided power
FACTORIES WERE
LARGE BUILDINGS
WHICH CONTAINED
MACHINES
• These machines produced goods very quickly
and much more cheaper than before.
• MANY MORE OBJECTS, MUCH MORE
QUICKLY
STEAM POWER
Steam power was used to:
• automate factories
• Power locomotives and steamboats
By 1830 there were steam railways in England
and in the U.S.A., and steamships crossed the
Atlantic Ocean regularly.
THE VICTORIAN AGE
During the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-
1901) new forms of energies were used:
-ELECTRICITY
PETROLEUM
New materials were available:
-IRON
-STEEL
-CHEMICALS
