LEARNER- CENTRED APPROACH
The foundation of the learner-centred approach is based on the constructionist theory whereas students give meaning to what they learn by connecting new information to what they already know with teachers only assisting them. (Tang, 2023)
SCHOLARS
*Lev Vygotsky
*Maria Montessori
OBJECTIVE
To improve engagement, motivation, knowledge retention among the students in line with the teaching and learning in of the 21st century (Olugbenga,2021)
METHODS
(Bas and Beyhan, 2019
Flipped classroom
This is a method in which instruction is given to group of students which transcend to individual students and the result group is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning
Active learning
Allows students to solve problems, answer questions, formulate questions of their own, discuss, explain, debate or brainstorm during classes.
Inductive learning
Include inquiry based learning, case based learning, problem based learning, project based learning and discovery learning
Gamify learning
Use game method to add on element of fun in learning and increases critical thinking. E.g: Kahoot and Ludomatic
Expeditionary learning
This learning is based on the idea that there is considerable educational value in getting students out of the classroom and into the real world
Cooperative learning
students work in teams on problems and projects under conditions that assures both positive interdependence and individual accountability
Lev Vygotsky
Vygotsky's Sociocultural theory states that learning is a crucially social process as opposed to an independent journey of discovery.
Hussain,(2018) stated in Vygotsky’s social constructivist and collaborative learning, teachers do not take the role as the solo presenter in class. Instead, teachers act as a guide who provides students with opportunities to confidently share their ideas to the class.
Lev Vygotsky Sociocultural Theory
CHARACTERISTICS
Students able to develop soft skills such as problem solving, decision making and team work
Give some control for the students over learning process
Involvement of students in the learning process
CHALLENGES
Time constraints
The learner centered method requires more time as students are given the freedom to learn without haste
Assessment
Standardized test are still traditional in nature which includes isolated application, facts or memorized data
Lack of Resources
Inadequate human, material and financial resources stand as a barrier to the implementation of learner centered method
Inadequate training for teachers
Most teachers are too comfortable with the traditional centered method thereby locking their minds to upgrade, training and exposure.
Large class size
The learner centered method is effectively delivered in a class well managed and in decreased class size
IMPACT ON STUDENTS
Improves students' communication and collaboration skills
CONCLUSION
The learner- centred approach is the most ideal technique to be used in the classroom as the world needs people who are equipped with critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills which cannot be imitated by the machines,(Olugbenga,2021).
Stronger relationships between students and teachers
Students gain competency at their own pace
