ADDIE MODEL FOR TEACHING CAREGIVERS IN AN ASSISTED LIVING ABOUT ORAL HEALTH
DEVELOPMENT
Conduct a pilot test with a small group of caregivers to identify any issues with the training materials or instructional methods.
Create the flow of the lesson or presentation, ensuring that it is interesting and something the caregivers can understand and engage.
Develop the lesson or presentation from the resources available. Ensure that the content is accessible.
Based on feedback from the pilot test, revise the lesson, materials, PPT and any activities as necessary.
ANALYZE
Develop a comprehensive set of learning objectives that effectively communicate the importance of oral health in relation to systemic diseases and provide practical knowledge to empower older adults in taking care of their overall health.
Target: Identify the caregivers participating in the training program.
Resources:The setting will be an older adult facility with caregivers or a lecture with older adults and family members at a community center.
Needs Assessment: Determine the specific needs of caregivers and older adults. Identify common oral health issues among older adults and the link to systemic diseases. Collect data on caregivers' existing knowledge and the challenges they face.
DESIGN
Resources
Develop a curriculum that includes modules on oral health basics. Ensure the content is in plain language and easy to understand. The link between oral and systemic health, risk factors for oral health disorders, the effect of nutrition on oral health, best way to discuss the importance of oral health and how to maintain good oral health, and patients' perceived oral health barriers.
Create a Lesson with a PPT lecture and a video regarding oral hygiene instruction. Plan using active learning in groups of three to four people. Caregivers will demonstrate their understanding of oral health by role-playing to each other in a small group the importance of oral health in relation to systemic diseases and providing practical knowledge to empower older adults to take care of their overall health. The caregivers will role-play the real-life steps to improve home care for older adults to reduce the bacteria that causes inflammation related to systemic health in compliance with the criteria presented in the lecture.
Create LO for caregivers
Learning Objectives
(Cognitive-Comprehension) After attending the lecture, caregivers can describe the reasons for the importance of oral health and how to maintain good oral health, which considers oral health literacy, nutrition, and patients' perceived oral health barriers with complete accuracy.
(Cognitive-Application) After attending the lecture, caregivers will demonstrate their understanding of oral health by effectively explaining to their peers in a small group the importance of oral health in relation to systemic diseases and providing practical knowledge to empower older adults to take care of their overall health without error.
(Affective-Responding) After attending the lecture, caregivers can present information to older adults regarding the relationship between oral and systemic health, risk factors for oral health disorders, the effect of nutrition on oral health, and preventive measures that are appropriate to mitigate risk on both individual and population levels according to the materials in the lecture.
(Affective-Organization) After attending the lecture, caregivers will follow through with an oral health education module for older adults in their home setting for six months.
(Psychomotor-Origination) After attending the lecture, caregivers can demonstrate real-life steps to improve home care for older adults to reduce the bacteria that causes inflammation related to systemic health in compliance with the criteria presented in the lecture.
(Psychomotor-Origination) After attending the lecture, caregivers will work with a nutritionist to create a better nutrition plan and preventive health program for older adults based on social and economic needs or perceived oral health care within three months.
Create the training materials for the presentation, such as a handout or flyer, videos, and interactive exercises. May need media resources for non-english speakers.
EVALUATION
Provide a questionnaire for the caregivers to fill out and give criticism for improvements or anything done well during the presentation and possibly quiz or assessments to gauge participants' knowledge of oral health and systemic diseases .
Surveys: Collect feedback from participants to evaluate the effectiveness of the training program. Review feedback, looking at what needs to be changed and why.
Analyze to ensure that the understanding of the topic is concrete for all participants.
Assess or analyze the practical application of oral care techniques by caregivers and older adults as observed during implementation.
Reflection
The training program may need to be adapted as needed to accommodate different learning styles, literacy levels, and cultural backgrounds among caregivers and older adults. The programs' longevity depends on review every six months and updating the materials to reflect current research and best practices in oral health and systemic disease prevention.
IMPLEMENTATION
Observe during lesson or presentation for feedback during evaluation.
Encourage caregivers to provide feedback on the training program to improve it continuously. Have a designated time for feedback or questions from participants.
Presententation to Caregivers
CE (concrete experience) = Caregivers will demonstrate their understanding of oral health by role-playing with each other in a small group. The Caregivers will role-play the best way to discuss the importance of oral health and how to maintain good oral health.
The importance of oral health in relation to systemic diseases and providing practical knowledge to empower older adults to take care of their overall health. The real-life steps to improve home care for older adults to reduce the bacteria that causes inflammation related to systemic health in compliance with the criteria presented in the lecture
RO (reflective observation) = Caregivers will reflect on their role play and understanding of oral health by evaluating their peers in a small group. Room for improvement may be necessary or how well they did while discussing the importance of oral health in relation to systemic diseases and providing practical knowledge to empower older adults to take care of their overall health.
AC (abstract conceptualization) = The caregivers will discuss what was learned by the role-play activity when discussing oral health.
AE (active experimentation) = The caregivers will go home and teach oral health education in their home setting to other staff, caregivers, and facility residents about oral health related to systemic health.
Lecture, including a PPT presentation and media resources. I may need to have written or materials for non-English speakers available. The link between oral and systemic health, risk factors for oral health disorders, the effect of nutrition on oral health, the best way to discuss the importance of oral health and how to maintain oral health, and patients' perceived oral health barriers.
Provide additional resources, such as pamphlets, websites, or contacts for dental care professionals, to support ongoing learning.
