Formative data
It can be used to make immediate instructional decisions, such as reteaching or restructuring units.
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Measures student success or proficiency by comparing it against standards or benchmarks. It´s a method of evaluating student learning at the end of an instructional unit, comparing progress against achievement standards for a particular year level.
Examples
Include end-of-unit tests, district benchmark assessments, and state exams, presentations and digital portfolios.
Summative data
It can be used to determine the effectiveness of teaching strategies, restructure unit plans, and adjust teaching strategies.
It can also be used as accountability for state districts to restructure program offerings, such as offering additional English language development courses or pullouts for emerging students.
