Plot
Rising action
Della decides to sacrifice her most prized possession, her long, beautiful hair. Meanwhile, Jim sells his most cherished possession, a valuable pocket watch that has been a family heirloom for generations.
Exposition
Della, the wife, is introduced as she faces a dilemma. It's Christmas Eve, and she longs to buy a special gift for her husband, Jim. However, she only has $1.87 to her name, far from enough to purchase a meaningful gift.
Climax
Della sells her hair to a wig-maker in exchange for $20. Her decision to cut and sell her hair represents a significant personal sacrifice. Jim is introduced as he arrives home. Jim also give Della a special Christmas gift and make Della shocked.
Falling action
Jim and Della come to the full realization of the sacrifices they've made for each other. They understand the irony of their gifts – Della has no use for the combs she bought since she sold her hair, and Jim can't use the watch chain he purchased because he sold the watch.

Synopsis
