VU LAN FESTIVAL
Origin
The Vu Lan ceremony originates from the story of Venerable Maudgalyayana saving his mother from the life of a hungry ghost.
-
After achieving righteous fruition, he used miraculous powers and learned that his mother, Thanh De, was suffering the life of a hungry ghost in hell because of many evil karma committed during her life time.
With filial piety, he brought rice to his mother in hopes that she would be less hungry and thirsty.
However, because she had to pay the price for her evil karma, as soon as the food was brought to her mouth, it suddenly turned into red fire.
