Overfishing
Overfishing is when a species of fish is removed from a body of water faster than the species can repopulate
What measures are the EU taking
The Irish Conservation Box is an area of 100,000 km2
Fishermen can not fish here or they will be fine (money)
Fishing is restricted here for the spawning ground for fish
Deforestation
What is deforestation
Deforestation is the clearing, or cutting down, of forests
Where is it taking place?
Deforestation is taking place in tropical and sub-tropical regions.
The results of deforestation
When their forests is removed, they lose their traditions way of life.
The cutting down of forests affects everyone in the world
Farming
Farming, the physical landscapes along with climate and soil that a farmer will choose
How the Physical Landscape help farming in The Paris Basin
Climate
Early April temperatures
Early April temperatures are warm which is good for the growth of cereal seeds.
Distributed rainfall in the area
The distributed rainfall of about 800mm per year which good for the growth of cereals
Summer Temperatures
Summer Temperatures are 18 degrees Celsius which is good for harvesting and ripening of cereals
Soil
Easily tiled
The soil is easily tiled by machinery
Fertile Soils
Soils are fertile which is weathered from sedimentary rock and fine soils deposited by wind
Relief
The landscape
The landscape is flat which is good for tractors and combine harvesters
The Paris Basin
The Paris Basin is one of the most productive agriculture regions in Europe
Devoted to crops
The Paris Basin is largely devoted to crops such as wheat, barley and maize
Forestry
Sustainable Forestry in Costa Rica
Different types of species in the Costa Rica Forests
250 types of reptiles
2,000 butterfly species
870 types of birds
163 types of amphibians
13,000 plant species
Sustainable management of forests in Sweden
Sweden is the best countries that can sustainably manage their forests
Sustainable forestry is to keep it sustainable, you must plant as many trees as the industry cuts down
Commercial fishing
Commercial fishing is a primary activity because it exploits the sea and the creatures that naturally live in it
Modern Trawlers
Modern Trawlers are very well equipped to catch fish and stay at sea for long periods of time
Trawlers have cold rooms that allow them to stay at sea for days
Hydraulic Winches
Hydraulic winches can lift several tons of fish onto the deck and process them
Super Trawlers
Very large trawlers are known as super trawlers or like factory ships
Fishing nets
Fishing nets are enormous allowing them to catch huge amounts of fish at a time
Sustainable fishing
Sustainable fishing is to not fish more than reproduce rates
Irrigation
What is irrigation
The term given to the artificial watering of crops is irrigation
Farming in irrigated valley landscapes
Many parts of the world do not have enough rainfall to support
However, Irrigation can be used effectively in river valleys to provide bumper crops
An example is the Nile Valley of Egypt
The Nile Valley
The distance from the Aswan Dam to the sea is about 1800km
North of the dam, the landscape of the lower Nile Valley has features of an old age stage river
The valley opens out and the valley floor becomes a flat floodplain
Most of Egypt's population lives here
The Nile has a huge delta which has a flat landscape and is ideal for crops
Each year, floods covered the floodplain. The soil was fertilized by sediments
Since Egypt has very little rainfall, these annual floods have allowed people to live in the Nile floodplain and harvest crops successfully for several thousand years
In the 1960's a dam was started in Aswan to store the Nile waters for hydroelectricity and for year-round irrigation
The dam was completed in 1975
