Soviet Missiles in Cuba
after the bay of pigs incident, Castro's Cuba became closer to Moscow.
for Khrushchev, having an ally so close to the USA, was very good
it meant that he could threaten the USA to get his way, especially with USA missiles in turkey, so close to the Soviet border
The first nuclear weapons arrived in Cuba in the summer of 1962
the USA didn't realise what was going on until October 14th
JFK revealed the missiles location to the public of the USA after a week of discussion with his advisors.
JFK ordered a blockade of Cuba on the 21st of October 1962
the next day, he placed the USA on DEFCON3 - this meant that it was ready for an attack
Tensions rise
convinced the USA would invade Cuba, the soviet union prepared for a fight.
on the 23 October, soviet ships approached Cuba carrying more missiles
24 October the ships faced each other waiting for one or the other to back down. the USA declares DEFCON2.
at 7:15 am on the 25 October, a soviet ship passed the line, but was let go when the Americans learnt it was just an oil tanker.
JFK assembled 120, 000 troops in Florida ready for an invasion for Cuba
Tension increases ( but not because of the leaders decisions)
27 October the USA detected a Soviet submarine close to Cuba. hover, it was found out that it had no contact with the outside world.
believing that the war had begun, the captain almost launched a nuclear torpedo
the cubans shot down a soviet spy plane
an american plane drifted into soviet airspace
Crisis averted
on the 26 October Kennedy received a letter from Khrushchev telling him he would remove the missiles
on the 27 October Khrushchev send a second letter demanding the removal of the missiles in turkey. JFK agreed but only if the removal was kept a secret.
