WILLIAM WORDSWORTH
PAG.188
HE WAS BORN IN 1770 IN THE ENGLISH LAKE DISTRICT WHERE HE SPENT HIS HAPPY CHILDHOOD AND ADULT LIFE.
THIS PLACE BECAME HIS MAIN SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
HE'S A ROMANTIC POET BELONGING TO THE FIRST GENERATION OF POETS, KNOWN AS TE
LAKE POETS
BECAUSE THEY LIVED IN THE LAKE DISTRICT.
HE WAS FULL OF ENTUSIASM FOR THE FRENCH REVOLUTION AND FOR THE DEMOCRATIC IDEALS OF FREEDOM, BROTHERHOOD AND EQUALITY
BUT, WHEN THE REVOLUTION BECAME VIOLENT, HE HAD A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN.
SO, HE WENT TO LIVE WITH HER SISTER DOROTHY.
THE SAME YEAR HE MOVED TO SOMERSET TO BE NEAR COLERIDGE. TOGETHER THEY PRODUCED A COLLECTIONS OF POEMS CALLED
LIRICAL BALLADS
,THAT IN THE SECOND EDITION CONTAINS A "PREFACE" BY WORDSWORTH THAT BECAME THE
MANIFESTO OF ENGLISH ROMANTICISM
IN THIS
MANIFESTO
WORDSWORTH STATES WHAT THE
SUBJECT MATTER AND THE LANGUAGE OF POETRY
SHOULD BE:
EVERIDAY SITUATIONS AND ORDINARY PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY HUMBLE, RURAL PEOPLE.
THE LANGUAGE SHOULD BE SIMPLE, AND THE OBJECT MENTIONED CALLED BY THEIR ORDINARY NAMES.
THEREFORE,THE
POET
IS NOT A MAN IN AN IVORY TOWER BUT A MAN AMONG MEN, WRITING ABOUT WHAT INTERESTS MANKIND.
THE POET HAS THE ABILITY OF IMGINATION AND THANKS TO IT HE CAN MAKE EVERIDAY SITUATION MORE INTERESTING.
POETRY IS THE
SPONTANEOUS OVERFLOW OF POWERFUL FEELING
NATURE MEANS ALSO THE WORLD OF
SENSES
ABOVE ALL THE
SENSES OF THE EYE AND EAR
. TO PERCEIVE THE BEAUTY OF NATURE.
SENSATIONS LEAD TO SIMPLE THOUGHTS AND THEN THEY COMBINES INTO COMPLEX IDEAS.
MEMORY
IS A VERY IMPORTANT ELEMENT. CHILD'S EXPERIENCES, RETAINED IN MEMORY, ARE THE FOOD FOR THE FUTURE YEARS.
THERE IS A RELATION BETWEEN PRESENT AND PAST EXPERIENCE, AND
ALL POETRY RESULTS FROM EMOTION RECOLLECTED IN TRANQUILLITY
WORDSWORTH WAS INTERESTED IN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NATURE AND MAN.
HE THINKS THAT MAN AND
NATURE
ARE INSEPARABLE: MAN EXISTS NOT OUTSIDE THE NATURAL WORLD BUT AS AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN IT.
NATURE COMFORTS MAN IN SORROW, IT'S A SOURCE OF PLEASURE AND JOY, IT TEACHES MAN TO LOVE AND TO ACT IN A MORAL WAY.
WORDSWORTH DOESN'T USE THE TRADITIONAL VERSE BUT THE
BLANK VERSE
(REGULAR METRICAL BUT
UNRHYMED LINES
)
