Definition: A (usually quick!) low-stakes assessment that checks for student understanding of the topic at hand. Used to give effective feedback in order to improve student learning outcomes!

Definition: A high-stakes assessment that occurs at the end of a unit/course, after learning has occured.
Definition: Benchmark assessments are used to judge student mastery/performance against a set standard of expected learning objectives within a school year. Used to track long term learning goals.
Definition: Diagnostics are given at the beginning of a course/unit to determine a student's strengths, weaknesses, and prior knowledge. This is used to inform the direction of the unit to come, to meet individual needs.
Definition: Performance assessments require students to show their knowledge by completing a task or practical skill at the end of a unit. Usually summative in nature, but beyond a traditional testing format.
