Formative
Definition - Type of assessment that measures where a student is at with the material and allows the teacher to get and give feedback. Definition - Type of assessment that has students perform tasks rather than typical tests or question answering seen on standard types of assessment.
Journals - Students can journal from the perspective of someone in history to share their knowledge of a historical figure/event.
Completing a lab - Students show their knowledge of science and the scientific process by following procedures and demonstrating understanding of different scientific topics.
Diagnostic
Definition - Type of assessment used to determine students strengths and weaknesses with different topics and their misconceptions or misunderstandings. Diagnostic pre-assessments can help teachers plan instruction to meet student needs like backfilling information from the previous year.
KWL - Chart filled out by students to let the teacher know what they know what they want to know and eventually what they learned
Beginning of the year quiz - Quiz given over everything the students might learn that year to see what they already know.
Summative
Definition - Type of assessment that evaluates what a student has learned over a period of learning like a unit. Typically a major grade like an exam, project, or paper
Final project - takes all the learning a student has done over a unit and has them demonstrate knowledge through different related activities.
Final exam - Test that covers an entire unit or semester of learning and shows what a student has learned.
