Formative Assessments
Definition: Formative assessments are a way of gathering data on a student's learning progression. They can be used to gather feedback in order to monitor and adjust instruction. This form of assessment is optional (but highly encouraged), and often does not have to be taken for a grade.
Thumbs up/Thumbs down: As a teacher progresses through a lesson, asking students to show how they feel about the content by giving a thumbs up or thumbs down is an informal way to gather feedback to adjust pace and instruction.
DLIQ: At the conclusion of a lesson, students will be asked to name one thing they did, one thing we learned, something that was interesting, and one question they still have.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmarks are a necessary form of assessment. They are a way to track a student's progression toward long-term academic goals.
District Assessment: A standardized test created by the school district to assess student's progress and achievement by grade level.
STAAR: The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness is a state standardized test used to assess student achievement and accumulated knowledge, based on grade level.
Summative Assessments
Definition: Summative assessments are typically given at the end of a unit to to evaluate what a student has learned. These assessments are high stakes. These assessments are to be compared to either the previous benchmark or a standardized learning goal.
Midterm/End-of-Unit Exam: This exam should be given at the end of a unit to assess what a student has learned.
Final Paper: Essay style paper where students will detail the component of a unit and provide definitions and examples
Performance Assessment
Defintion: This type of assessment requires a student to perform a task. Students are expected to apply and showcased learned skills.

Presentation: Students will create a presentation of the content from the unit to present to the class.
Diagnostic Assessment
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are essential pre-assessments. They are administered prior to the start of a unit to gauge a student's knowledge, strengths, and weaknesses. These assessments should be used to plan instruction, pace, and any misconceptions that the students currently have.
Quick Write: Prior to the start of a unit, students will engage in a Quick Write where they will be given 3 minutes to write down everything they know about a topic and any questions they have.
Diagnostic Quiz: This quiz should be given prior to a unit and should not be taken for a grade. It should be used to gauge students prior knowledge.
