Formative Assessment
Definition: Formative Assessment is a type of assessment used in order to gauge student understanding during an ongoing unit or lesson. These assessments are typically given during a unit and allows the teacher to adjust instruction if necessary.
Example 1: Discussion/Discussion Post - This form of formative assessment can be used to monitor the level of student understanding during a unit. This can be administered electronically through a discussion forum with a discussion question, or it can be done in the whole group class setting. The students answer a question about the lesson and the teacher guides instruction based on the answers.
Example 2: Post it Note Exit Ticket - Students answer a question such as "Represent the number 17 in expanded form" on a sticky note and turn in to the teacher. In this formative assessment, the students are answering a question to check for understanding and the teacher is able to see where students are struggling and where they are thriving.

Summative Assessment
Definition: Given to students at the end of a major unit or term to determine the level of understanding of a larger quantity of information.
Example 1: STAAR - A cumulative exam given at the end of the school year to check for understanding in all areas of a subject.
Example 2: Final exams/End of Course Exams - Exams given to students at the end of a semester or school year to check for a cumulative understanding of information taught over the whole course of instruction.
Performance Assessment
Definition: Performance assessments require students to perform a task and apply the skills they have learned in a way outside of just answering questions
Example 2: Portfolios - Portfolios are collections of student work over time to demonstrate growth and understanding in an area. These can be used to gauge student understanding as well as their growth over time. Students can keep all of their work from a subject in a portfolio and refer back to it to aid in their knowledge and skills. Teachers use this type of performance assessment to track growth.
Example 1: Science Experiment - Conducting a science experiment on their own teaches students how to put their knowledge and skills to work in order to perform the specific task. The teacher can use the results of the experiment to assess the students' understanding of the material.
Diagnostic Assessment
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used to show teachers and students the specific areas in which the students are needing extra help and the areas in which they are strong and do not need extra support.
Example 1: Pre-Assessments - Using Pre-Assessments tells the teacher the areas in which the students need to grow and the areas they are already strong in. The students will answer questions about material that they have not learned yet, but may have prior knowledge in.
Example 2: Word Splash - The students have a central topic or idea in a circle in the center of the paper. In the outside circle, the students write everything they know about the central idea or topic. This will gauge where the students are and what misconceptions they may have about the topic.
