Reichstag fire
1933 the Reichstag building was set on fire. Van de Lubbe, a young Dutch communist, was arrested and charged with starting the fire.

Many historians believe that the Nazis started the fire and blamed the communists in order to ban them from participating in the March elections.
hitler used the event to persuade the president to grant him emergency powers
The Decree
for the Protection of the People and the State was passed.
This restricted freedom of speech, the press and allowed imprisonment without trial. Hitler used the law to arrest known communists.
Propaganda
Nazi violence and terror massively increased after the Reichstag Fire. hitler used the emergency powers to get rid of political opponents.
They stopped other parties campaigning for the election and flooded the German people with propaganda.
despite all of the propaganda the Nazis still didn't get an overall majority in the march elections
enabling law
this allowed hitler to pass laws without the consent of the riechstag.
to pass this law he would need to 2/3s of the Reichstag to agree
he banned the communists from voting, and convinced the other parties that it was needed to deal with Germanys problems
this became the cornerstone for the Third Reich. it gave hitler the power to do ANYTHING
when Hindenburg died hitler elected himself president. he gave himself a new title - Fuhrer, meaning 'leader'.
He was now head of state and commander of the army.
the same day the German army swore an oath of loyalty to hitler.
the SA were hitlers personal army
Half its members came from the unemployed; many were ex-soldiers who fought in World War One.
the SA gave them shelter and food.
Some of its members were hooligans and street fighters – they were used as thugs to terrorise Hitler’s opponents.
The SA protected Nazi speakers and helped deliver propaganda leaflets.
