Food safety must be taken more seriously (Mind Map)
Why is food safety important for Cambodians?
Cambodian's food(mostly processed fishery products) is exported to different countries around the world, thus those food must meet the safety standard to be able to compete in the market. Moreover, safety standard should be high to be able to enter the European market, per the country's goal.
Cambodian citizens including children, students, workers, employees, elders, etc. consumes these food.
There are many cases of food poisoning counting from children above 5 years old, these food poisoning might also lead to death. Chemical contaminated food can also cause cancer or long-term diseases. Risk of foodborne illness.
The cause of foodborne disease are poor hygiene when food is made, incorrect storage methods, used of contaminated water, etc. There were many outbreaks of disease caused by food between 2010-2019.
Climate changes and pandemic also affects the safety of food.
What measure have been taken?
Cambodian's ministry of agriculture, forestry, and fishery(MAFF) have been visiting many fishery enterprise to examine processed fishery product's quality and its safety standard.
School principal have burned unhealthy snacks and revoked contracts of stall vendors that sell unhealthy food.
Cambodia have implanted food safety laws such as FoodSafetyLaw, Law on standards of Cambodia, Consumer Protection law, and the law of management of quality and safety of products and services.
What should be improve?
According to interviews done by Kiripost.com,
customers wants government to check food sold by vendors/stalls to eliminate the doubtful of hygiene from customers
pollution and dust from streets might have also reduced the quality of the food, thus having a proper place to sell food and proper equipment to keep food safe is a must.
Government should also take the responsible to constantly checking food and ingredients, to find the source that may leads to unsafety of food.
Government should provide streets vendors with food safety trainings and proper storage methods.
Government should motivate citizen to grow growable ingredients locally rather than buying imported goods.
Why is food quality low in Cambodia? + Problems
According to interviews done by khmertimeskh.com, low-quality food sold to children in schools is because many children do not have enough money to afford healthy food, thus store owners can only sell low-quality food to profit by meeting their customer demands.
Farmers lack motivation to farm vegetables because of the cost, time and energy needed. Moreover, vegetables have been daily imported from Vietnam without having a safety examination from the ministry.
Local ingredient's quality is safe but the price is higher compared to low quality and unexamined imported ingredients. The gaps of the price between local and imported goods are too different.
