Formative Assesment
Definition: Formative assessments are a way to gather information from student work in order to modify and/or adjust upcoming instruction. These assessment are low stakes and often done to check understanding
Exit Ticket- Students complete an exit ticket that typically include one or two questions over the topic they learned about during that unit
Write and Show- Students answer questions presented by the teacher, they write their answer on a white board than hold it up facing the teacher all at the same time.
Summative Assesment
Definition: These are used to evaluate student performance at the end of a unit or year . These are high stakes and usually cover a longer time period.
Unit Test: Students take a test at the end of one of their instruction units. These summarize all the learning over a longer period of time.
STAAR- STAAR tests are end of year tests that students must use all the knowledge learned throughout the year.
Interim-Bookmark
Definition- These are used to see student progress over a period of time. It helps to track how students are performing at various points in the school year.
MOY- Middle of Yaer exams are administered to students dat the end of the first semester. This data is used to see how students have grown throughout the first semester.
MAP- Map testing is a periodically administered exam that shows how students are prgoressing throughout the school year.
Diagnostic
Definition: These assessments are used before any learning on a new topic begins. It is used to see what students know before any instruction. This allows the teacher to narrow down what they need to focus on.
K-W-L Chart: This charts gives students a chance to share what they already know, and what they want to learn before a unit begins. It also gives them a chance to share what they did learn at the end.
PAST- This test is a way to asses what phonics skills students are capable of. This allows teachers to assess what still need to be taught.
Performance
Definition: These are a way to assess student learning through them performing an act rather than taking a test.
Portfolios: Students are required to compile examples of work to show their understanding instead of just one assignment it is multiple pieces of work.
Research Paper: Students take the time to complete research and write an essay to display their learning. Typically used in english and history classes.
