Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An assessment given to determine what a student is learning and also determine how they will continue to do as they continue to lern the same subject.
Example 1: 240 practice tests: These assessments help determine what you learned from the 240 learning modules and to determine how well you will do on the curriculum exam as well as what you need to continue studying to be successful.
Example 2: District assessments: Standardized tests to determine students learning throughout the year and also determine if they are on target to pass the STAAR test by the end of the year.
Summative
Definition: An assessment given at the end of a period of learning such as an end of unit test. This assessment tells you how much information a student learned from the entire period of learning.
Example 1: End of Unit Test (ELAR): At the end of an amplify unit, unit assessments are taken by the students' to determine what they learned and retained from the entire unit. This assessment looks at typically about 4-6 weeks worth of learning.
Example 2: STAAR Test: The STAAR Tests are designed to assess the information learned and retained by students' over the course of a year of learning. They are standardized, multiple choice exams.
Diagnostic
Definition: an assessment that is used to determine the prior knowledge a student enters a lesson with. These are used to understand the students strengths and weaknesses and helps the teacher plan their lesson based on the needs of the students.
Example 1: Beginning of the year (BOY) test for math in kindergarten: Students are asked to identify the number symbols for 0-10, count a set of 20 objects, and count as high as they can go out loud. This determines what number knowledge the student is entering kindergarten with to understand where the student will need more support as well as to know where to start teaching.
Example 2: PAST: This is a phonological awareness test that determines what areas of spoken sound the student has strengths and needs in. This is given to determine what areas need to be focused on in RLA instruction.
Performace
Definition: an assessment that allows students to show their learning through some sort of performance or project rather than through a traditional multiple choice test.
Example 2: Diorama: students create a 3D diorama (model) of a specific scene from a story or history lesson to be assessed over their understanding of the setting and the details of the event they are creating.

Example 1: Act it Out: have students act out q retelling of a story read in class to assess if the students understood the beginning, middle and end.

Formative
Definition: Gathering information about student's learning during the teachings of the lesson in order to alter instruction to better teach to the students' needs.
Example 1: White Board Exit Slip: Have students show you the answer to a math question or correctly writing a spelling word in order to be dismissed to transitioning to the next activity.
Example 2: Sides of the Room Word Work: Have students go to the right of the room if a sentence that describes a new vocabulary word is read and move to the left of the room if a sentence does not describe the new word.
