Strengths: More ethical, informed consent and lack of deception

Participant
Strengths: The observer is not viewing from a distance and therefore may gain a greater understanding of the participant's behavior
Weaknesses: The observer may become too involved in the other participants leading to a potential observer bias - they become less objective observers
The researcher joins the group of participants and acts as a part of the group in order to observe the other participants

Strengths: The observer is more likely to be more objective in the observation as they are not getting personally involved

The researcher does not become a part of the group. The observe from a distance (overt or covert), they will not become a part of the group itself
