LaCrisha Allbee Assessments
Diagnostic
Definition:
Diagnostic Assessments is a tool teachers can use to collect information about a student’s strengths and weaknesses in a skill area. Usually given at the beginning of a course of study.
Pre-tests:
These are administered before a new unit or lesson is started to determine what students already know about the topic.
K-W-L Charts:
K-W-L stands for “Know”, “Want to Know”, and “Learned." They help teachers assess what students already know, but also what they are curious to learn.
Performance
Definition:
Performance Assessments allow students to demonstrate their knowledge by constructing an answer, producing a product, or performing an activity.
Creating a Newspaper:
Critical thinking skills are used in the student's works to create a task, graded by a rubric. They are given the opportunity to show what they know rather than simply writing down facts.
Laboratory Investigation:
Conducting a lab will show how well students understand scientific concepts and can carry out scientific processes.
Formative
Definition:
Formative Assessments help teachers understand student learning while they teach, and provide them with information to adjust their teaching strategies accordingly.
Think-Pair-Share:
In this strategy, teachers pose a question, students think individually about their answer, pair up with a partner to discuss their thoughts, and then share their responses with the class.
Exit Tickets:
At the end of a class, teachers can ask students to write a quick summary of what they learned or respond to a specific question.
Summative
Definition:
Summative Assessments measure student progress as an assessment of learning administered at the end of an instructional unit.
End-of-Chapter/Unit Tests:
Often composed of a variety of question types (multiple choice, short answer, essay, etc.), they evaluate student learning at the end of each unit or chapter.
Portfolios:
A collection of student work that shows their learning progress and achievements. It may include a variety of work samples, such as essays, problem sets, journal entries, and projects.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition:
Interim/Benchmark Assessments are administered several times throughout the academic year, and provide educators with regular, periodic snapshots of student learning.
Midterm Exams:
Midterms provide a check-in point halfway through the semester or term.
Reading Level Assessments:
Reading level assessments are used periodically throughout the year to assess a student’s reading level.
