Formative
Definition: Formative assessments measure student comprehension in the process of learning a skill or acquiring new knowledge. What has the student learned so far?
Example 1: Four Corners- Stimulates student learning through movement and discussion. Students are presented with a controversial statement or asked a question. Each of the four corners of the classroom, an opinion or response is posted. The students express their opinion or response by standing in one of the four statements.
Example 2: Exit slips- All students will summarize and write and answer to a question. Each exit slip provides information on individual student learning.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessment is a form for pre-assessment where teachers can evaluate student's strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, skills before their instruction.
Example 1: Running Record- Running records are used to gather data on young readers who are still practicing fundamental skills and reading aloud. It measures a student's reading proficiency (measured by the number of words read correctly) as well as their reading habits (what they say and do while reading).
Example 2: Phonological Awareness Surveys- It is frequently used in kindergarten and first grade, but it may also be used to evaluate older students who consistently struggle well below expectations on basic decoding assessments.
Interim/ Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments provide teachers with information that they may use to analyze students learning progress throughout the year to determine how well they will perform on upcoming standardized tests or final exams.
Example 1: MAP- A computerized assessment given throughout the year to measure a student’s academic achievement and growth over time in reading and mathematics.
Example 2: STAAR- Is a standardized academic achievement exam developed to assess a student's understanding and application of the TEKS (Texas Essential understanding and Skills) at each evaluated grade, topic, and course.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments measure student comprehension at the end of a lesson or unit. What did the student learn overall?
Example 1: End of Unit Test- To assess the extent to which students comprehended the content being taught. Teachers may be able to identify students who are more likely to have academic difficulties in particular subject areas or with particular ideas by looking through the data.
Example 2: Final projects- Final Projects provide students the chance to apply what they have learned from the entire semester/year or end of a unit and put it all together and display a bit of their individuality and creativity.
Performance
Definition: Performance based assessment is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than an answer from a form.
Example 1: Debate- Provide students the chance to work in cooperative and collaborative groups. Students are able to learn new material and put their knowledge into practice by organizing and discussing their points of view on one side of an argument.
Example 2: Students learn how to prepare material for public presentation, and practice with feedback, and improves their speaking skills.
