Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to monitor the effectiveness between teacher instruction/ teaching and how well the students maintain understanding of content. These assessments are more of self checks during the lesson

KWL chart: the student will be given a table that is broken up into three sections to write on! Students will write 1)what they KNOW 2) what they WONDER and 3) What they learned
Summative
Summative assessments are used to track overall understanding of material after the information has been taught. These assessments are more formal and high stake, as you are being measured on what you know at the end of a topic
Final project: Given at the end of the unit and are used to measure application of taught knowledge to create a product
End of unit exam: Now that the students have completed the vocabulary, chapter quizzes, and assignments, the students will be tested over all of the varying material into 1 test.
Performance
A performance assessment is used to monitor how a student can physically apply what he/she has learned to similar, but more complex assignments, activities etc., in different formats
Presenting: The students are taking what they now know, learned, understand and representing that knowledge mastery by physically modeling that understanding
Example: You recently learned about the early 1600's and your class performs a play to represent the first thanksgiving
Lab stations: The students have recently learned about the water cycle and will work with their groups at different stations to create their own plant with multiple resources
Diagnostic
Diagnostic assessments are used to measure a students' knowledge, ability, understanding of topics that will be addressed in the class. These assessments can be used to alter instruction, delivery, or time spent on specific lessons if needed to compliment your students' strengths and weaknesses before beginning.
Bell ringers: Are given right when the students enter the classroom and are used to monitor where the class is currently at in terms of their knowledge of a given subject or lesson
Example: Can a polar bear live in the rainforest?
Pre test: This example will have a specific amount of questions that are looking for a specific answer to determine where you as a teacher need to start, or revisit within a lesson. You are not expected to get every answer right, it is just a guide to see where you left off
Example:
1) How many apples do we have in our basket?
2) How many more grapes do we have than apples?
3) If you combine the amount of grapes and apples, are there more than bananas?
Interim/Benchmark
Interim/Benchmark assessments are used to monitor progression of understanding periodically through the school year. They are used to check for expected growth and advancement in future lessons and instruction
Chapter test: Given before entering a new chapter to ensure correct understanding and interpretation. These test will only pertain to what you have already read in that chapter, or past chapters!
STAAR: Given to assess a students' mastery in the expected knowledge of varying core subjects in a specific grade level.
