The CPU
The CPU is made up of 4 components: registers, control unit, Arithmetic logic unit (which does all calculations) and cache.
You can increase the speed of your computer by: increasing clock speed, increasing the number of cores and increasing cache memory.
CPU means Central Processing Unit.
The CPU fetches, decodes and executes instructions.
Memory and Storage
Volatile memory is memory that isn't saved when the computer is turned off (RAM).
Storage is a place where data and instructions are kept.
Non- volatile memory is memory that is saved when the computer is turned off (ROM).
Primary storage is closest to the CPU (ROM, RAM, Cache).
Secondary storage is futhest away (DVD, CD, Blu Ray.
Embedded System
An example is: a washing machine, smart watches, smart fridges, smart TVs, dishwasher, fitness trackers.
A washing machine is a computer because it performs IPOS.
An embedded system is a computer system with a dedicated function.
Hardware and Software
Software: something that is on the computers but you can't see it working
Application Software: the pieces of software on a computer that the user wants to use (Snapchat, WhatsApp, Facebook).
Utility Software: software used to clean, protect and organise. It is not needed but helps run the computer smoothly (Antivirus, McAffee).
Operating System: software that is NEEDED to run the computer (iOS, Android, Windows).
